Season Finale

The hunting season 2018-2019 is over for me. You could continue with fox, wild boar, beaver and for a few weeks later on in the spring, early summer some other species too. But for me, this is it. So we had one last chance to go, and together with some Germans we went hunting. A friend of mine had organized two of my absolute favourite kinds of dogs, the Finnish hounds at our disposal, so we started off with hare hunting. The snow conditions were super challenging, the crust on the snow kinda holds, until it doesn´t and the edge is very sharp, so even the dogs had a rough time. There were night tracks, but between the dogs and 6 of us, we only saw one hare crossing the road and no opportunity to shoot. But how I miss my Finnish hound, me sitting by the campfire to give her time to find the hare and start barking. Just the best :) One day I´ll have a Finnish hound again - provided this "uralt" hunting tradition still exists - I´m still a member of the Finnish Hound Association, just to keep my dream alive! I am counting on the politicians to do their part in making sure we can hunt with our dogs in the future, too.

So as did not get any hares, we moved on to pheasants. I let my GSP off the leash, and he was ready! It did not take him very long to find a bird, he had a steady point, waited until we got there and then an explosive avancé to the bird. Unfortunately the shooter misses. The bird was hiding under a spruce, I never even saw it. But well done, Luppo!

The lunch was a very tasty white-tailed deer goulash by the fireplace, we really felt like taking a nap afterwards! But we had come to hunt, so hunt we did! We went after some more pheasants. We had two dogs in my group, and they searched the area intensively. I think they either spooked two pheasants or had a crash, anyway, lost both birds. Then Luppo had a steady point, and I got there to give him the ok to flush the bird, a great avancé and I downed the bird. The video is here. It was such a good performance from both of us, that I immediately pronounced my season over and handed my side-by-side to my German friend. Thanks to Franziska for the video :) 

We went on to have another opportunity, but luckily the other team had been more succesful, so there´s going to be lovely pheasant meal for Stefan, Chris, Annabelle and Franziska!

I have to mention. We finished off the lovely day (and the best ever season for me) at the Glenlivet Whisky tasting. My favourite was this special edition produced for the Nordic market. And I should mention, whisky got new friends, as did Birger. They even have Erdinger Urweiss :)
