After my Finnish hound had to be put to sleep two summers ago, I´ve had no need to go to the vet, other than for vaccinations. This time was kinda the same - Simon needed to get his hips and elbows xrayed. I could have lived without the knowledge, but I understand and appreciate the need for the breeder to know, if her choices and the genetics, which we cannot control have made a decent match. Of course a decent diet and plenty of exercise suitable for a growing puppy are essential - but for the most part, the dog is what the genes dictate. I was lookng around to see the rates, and I was expecting an invoice around € 200. Which I think is a bit much for a simple, low-risk thing - even if the equipment must be pretty expensive. In any case, not feeling like going to an all new vet, I decided to use my regular practise, and I´m super glad I did. I was in and out in less than 30 minutes with an invoice a lot less than the expected. € 148,22. What did the xrays look like? Well, elbows should be clear without any hesitation. The hips, well the bone is round and smooth and the cup covers the entire tip of the bone, just as it should - but there is some space there - the vet said, it might be interpreted as being a bit loose, or not. I should know within the next couple of days. It´s the Finnish Kennelclub who will decide the grade of the bone structure, and often times their decisions are not what people are looking to get, but I must say - the system works really well. I have already paid for the final judgement by the Kennel Club and I should get notified, when it´s at my disposal online. Super easy. If this at all helps keeping the pure bred breeds healthier, then I´m all for it! Poor Simon, sleeping off his hangover :) |
